In the one-and-a-half months between June 16 and July 31, WhatsApp blocked almost 3 million Indian accounts. The figures were published in the firm's most recent compliance report. WhatsApp has released its second monthly report for the 46 days of 16 June to 31 July, following the new IT Rules 2021. According to the business, 30,27,000 Indian accounts were banned from WhatsApp during the period in question. "Over the years, the platform has constantly invested in Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies, data scientists and experts, and processes to keep its users safe on the network," according to a WhatsApp representative.

What is mean by "Accounts Actioned"?

74 accounts were "actioned" during this time. "Accounts Actioned" refers to incidents where WhatsApp took corrective action as a result of the report, according to WhatsApp. As a result of the complaint, either an account will be banned or a previously banned account will be restored. Also, reports may have been reviewed but not marked as 'Actioned' for a variety of reasons, including the user's need for assistance in accessing or using certain features, the user's request to restore a banned account being denied, or the reported account not violating Indian laws or WhatsApp's Terms of Service.

Given that WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, how does it identify accounts that need to be blocked?

WhatsApp relies on behavioral cues to detect misuse of the network, except for accounts for which the business receives complaints of abuse or spam transmission. To detect and prevent abuse on its platform, the business says it uses "unencrypted information" like user reports, profile images, group photos, and descriptions, as well as advanced AI techniques and resources.

Why are these numbers being reported suddenly on WhatsApp?

The new IT standards, which took effect on May 26, 2021, mandate that big digital platforms (with more than 5 million users) provide a monthly progress report. These reports must include the specifics of the complaints received and the actions are taken.

Every month, 8 million WhatsApp accounts are blocked around the world.

WhatsApp disables roughly 8 million accounts each month on average throughout the world to prevent abuse on the network.
